Gangnam Style explained

I fell in love with the infographic model to communicate quite sometime back.

Here is what I found online today. Viki, the global TV site powered by fans, today released an infographic that reveals how K-pop star Psy’s juggernaut music video ‘Gangnam Style’ took over the world. The infographic ranks the top 20 countries where the video has been most viewed and includes a month-by-month look at how viewership spread globally. The video has been translated into 24 languages helping it transcend geographic and language barriers.

Consumer prices rising!

All prices of the end consumers are rising in India. This includes basic things like sugar, gas, water, milk, fuel, vegetables and pulses have gone up!

Unni Krishnan & Tushar Dhara write in...

The consumer-price index climbed 9.9 percent from a year earlier, compared with a 9.75 percent advance reported earlier for October, the Statistics Office said in a statement in New Delhi today.

India’s consumer inflation is the fastest among 17 economies in the Asia-Pacific region tracked by Bloomberg. Reserve Bank of India Governor Duvvuri Subbarao held interest rates in October, and said last week that while price gains remain high, he expects they will ease in the January-March quarter.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government last week won parliamentary endorsement for its decision to allow foreign direct investment in supermarkets, a move it says can help lower food costs. The central bank meets next week to determine policy.

Vegetable prices climbed 14.74 percent last month from a year earlier, today’s statement showed, while sugar rose 17 percent and pulses gained 14.19 percent.

Business apps set to overtake consumer-centric market

Tejaswini writes: With the increasing use of smartphones and mobile internet in India, the market for enterprise-based apps is set to explode in the coming years, said an industry body official.

“Business apps or enterprise-based mobile apps market in terms of sale value will grow tremendously in India. It will outclass the market for consumer apps such as Whats-app and Google Maps,” said Gaurav Chopra, associate vice-president, Inte-rnet and Mobile Associ-ation of India (IAMAI).

According to global research firm Gartner, the application development software market in India is expected to grow 22.6 per cent to reach over $227 million in 2012, led by increasing adoption of software delivery through cloud-computing platform. “In the near future, every business enterprise will need a mobile app, given that the usage of smartphones and mobile internet is growing rapidly,” Mr Chopra told this correspondent.

Even Gartner study stated that 90 per cent of large enterprises and government agencies will use some aspect of cloud computing by 2015.

Currently, India is home to 9,000 app development companies.

“Emerging mobile applications, and devices are transforming the app development space rapidly, and are one of the top three CIO priorities at the enterprise level,” the study said.

According to a survey by leading consultancy Research2Guidance, India is slated to become one of the biggest players in the global app market by 2016, overtaking leading smartphone app markets such as the US, and five Western European Union countries. On the other hand, the penetration of smartphones in India stands at nine per cent of 913.5 million users, growing at an annual rate of 50 per cent.

Given that there is a massive potential for app development in the country, even the market for local apps is set to boom in the next two-three years.

The Science Behind Gifting

To be a really successful giver of gifts, a person usually needs to get inside the head of the intended recipient. Unfortunately, psychological studies reveal that givers and receivers have a hard time understanding each other's mind-sets, which can make for a tricky holiday experience.

Should you spend more on a gift? Should you be ashamed of regifting? Psychological studies reveal the tricky experience of giving the right holiday gifts. Leslie Yazel discusses on Lunch Break.

Take regifting. That Crock-Pot your well-meaning aunt gave you last year that you are shamefully contemplating wrapping up for your dear neighbor this year? Research shows you can go right ahead and regift it, shame intact. Your aunt probably won't mind.
More About Gratitude

Showing Appreciation at the Office? No, Thanks

Thank You; No, Thank You --- Grateful People Are Happier, Healthier

Many people shy away from regifting, or hide the fact they are doing it, out of fear the original giver of the item could be offended. Don't worry, says a recent study published in the journal Psychological Science. The person who first gave the item is less likely to be offended than the regifter expects.

Some gift givers spend time and energy trying to find just the right gift. But thoughtful gifts don't necessarily lead to greater appreciation, according to a study published in November in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General. The benefit of a thoughtful gift actually accrues mainly to the giver, who derives a feeling of closeness to the other person, the study found.

People are more appreciative when they receive a gift they have explicitly requested, according to a similar study published last year in a separate publication called the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

Sharon Love once received a book that was clearly regifted: It was inscribed to the giver. She gave it back to him the following year. Ms. Love, who heads a marketing agency in New York, is herself a regifter when a gift is appropriate for another person.

"It turns out it's not the thought that counts, it's the gift that counts," says Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago who co-authored the November study.

Another study found spending more money on a gift doesn't necessarily translate into greater appreciation. That might come as a surprise to many gift givers, who often assume that a more expensive gift conveys a higher level of thoughtfulness, according to the research, published in 2009 in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

"Everyone has been a giver and receiver often in the past," says Francis Flynn, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, who has done research in the field of gift giving. Despite knowing what these roles feel like, people often fail, for instance, to draw on the experience of being a recipient when they are shopping for a gift to give, he says.

Regifting, once a social taboo, is gradually gaining in acceptance. According to a nationwide consumer-spending survey by American Express, 58% of people believe it is OK sometimes to regift an item. That figure rises for the holiday season, when 79% of respondents said they believe regifting is socially acceptable. The survey, which polled about 2,000 people last year, found that nearly one-quarter of consumers said they regifted at least one item the previous holiday season.

Regifting can lead to awkward moments. Humera Sayeed, a graduate student at Loyola University Chicago, received a brown leather Marc Jacobs purse from her aunt last year. The 26-year-old says she appreciated the high-quality purse but it wasn't exactly her taste.

"I thought, 'You know, I know someone else would like it more than I would.' So I gave it to one of my friends for her birthday," Ms. Sayeed says. About six months later, the friend came over to Ms. Sayeed's aunt's house, purse in hand, and the aunt exclaimed, "You know, Humera has a purse just like that!"

"I said, 'You know Auntie, I loved it so much that I got her the same one,' " Ms. Sayeed fibbed. "I had a moment to probably come clean about it and I just decided it would be better not to, which I guess is why people feel sneaky about regifting."

In the study of regifting, researchers conducted five separate experiments involving nearly 500 people in both real and imagined scenarios. The reason people weren't overly bothered when their gifts were later regifted was because they generally believed the recipient was free to decide what to do with an item. On the other hand, regifters were fearful of offending because they believed the original giver should retain some say in how the gifts were used.

The different points of view held true regardless of whether the gift givers and receivers were friends. The relative desirability of the gift also didn't affect the findings. When the researchers introduced the concept of a national holiday for regifting into the experiments, participants were more likely to give away their gifts.

There are efforts to promote regifting. Money Management International, a nonprofit that helps people facing financial difficulties, has run a Regiftable.com website for more than five years and declared the third Thursday in December to be National Regifting Day, to coincide with many holiday office parties. At least one state, Colorado, has officially sanctioned an annual regifting day.

"Regifting isn't a bad thing, it's not quite as offensive as people might think it is," says Gabrielle Adams, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at the London Business School and a co-author of the recent study in Psychological Science.

Sharon Love, who heads a retail marketing agency, says she frequently regifts an item if she feels it is appropriate for another person. But she says she tries to be upfront about it.

Ms. Love, who lives in New York City, says she once received an entertainment and etiquette book that was clearly regifted: The book contained an inscription made out to the giver. "It did kind of make me mad, so I just kind of regifted it the following year back to him," she says. Ms. Love says she received a thank-you card in return.

The adage "It's the thought that counts" was largely debunked by the recent study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, which concluded that gift givers are better off choosing gifts that receivers actually desire rather than spending a lot of time and energy shopping for what they perceive to be a thoughtful gift. The study found thoughtfulness doesn't increase a recipient's appreciation if the gift is a desirable one. In fact, thoughtfulness only seemed to count when a friend gives a gift that is disliked.

"The secret to being a good gift giver…is to give them what they want," says Dr. Epley, from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Epley says that after his wife gave birth to their second child, he spent a lot of time dreaming up what he thought was the perfect Christmas gift for her: a behind-the-scenes day as a trainer at the Chicago aquarium. "She loves marine animals, I thought this would be the best thing for her," he says.

Instead, he says, "She hated the gift. The idea of squeezing into a Neoprene wetsuit a month after giving birth and holding a stinky fish over a penguin or a dolphin was the last thing she wanted to do." She returned the gift.

Now, Dr. Epley says he asks his wife to tell him what she wants before the holiday season. She presented him with a list last week.

Monday blues: You are special!

To beat the Monday Blues remember that you are special!

You can be an inspiration, a change agent, a motivation to others in whatever little way you can. You need not be a superstar to do that, you needn't be a leader to do that. You can be a small plus in the whole world of negatives but that little charge makes a hell of a difference.

Monday Blues: Who you are?

Let's do a simple exercise today.

Take a sheet of paper and write down five words that describe you. I am sure you have all the positive words in that list. Now do you really think other people in your life, people who interact with you every day - friends, colleagues, partners, clients and most importantly your family would come up with the same words if they are asked to describe you?

If yes, you are good. If no, then lets start jotting down things that would make them real.

Beat the Monday Blues away!

Monday Blues: Keep on shining

Continuing the Monday Blues series
this Monday our focus is to keep on shining. Here is how...

Be a verifiably optimistic friend your friends, colleagues can trust anytime. Your positive attitude is  what they should remember.

Was Dance my first love??

My very dear friend, Pooja Venugopal made this happen! A guest post from Ambili Babu. That's psychology + emotions + dancing + creativity & attitude for you!

Read on...

No it
wasn't!! It was just another extra curricular activity. I recall as a 5 year old, when every Saturday and Wednesday I would wear my red salwar kameez accessorized with a long bindi, largely drawn eyes and a dangling earring would rush to my class to meet my friends and of course, my guru.

But my early memories of dance are strenuous dance postures with severe cramps and repeated ‘adavus’ (basic steps), I could never understand the purpose of trying so hard to emote something so simple. If communication was the purpose might as well ‘Say it’!!

I was moulded into it, fitted into theories of dance and Natya shastra, as years rolled on dance became an integral part of my Soul, I began to think, breathe and feel dance. But sometimes I pondered if I was restricting myself to the frames of the conventional theories, but what use was it if I couldn't use it for a divine purpose? Was I limiting myself to be just a an entertainer or performer?? These were just questions that juggled within, I needed an answer but I never did.

Years later when I finished my schooling and I headed to Bangalore to pursue my studies, I was a part of a reputed institution, where arts of all kinds and forms were nurtured and developed, I was happy to be there, but I was afraid if I would lose my identity as a dancer. When one fine evening as I walked through the streets of Koramangala, I found a flyer with a dance pose on the ground, I picked it up, it read ‘Indian Contemporary dance.’ I was wondering what this could be. But I had a spark within and thought what if I found an answer to the question I always asked myself!! That weekend I prepared and enrolled myself to a journey that turned my life!

Freedom ‘of the dancer in you, there was no limitations, no boundaries, it was an endless ocean of experience and learning! My guru told me in the first class ‘you are a bad dancer and I wonder if u know that!' It crushed me. I cried and thought was all my prior training in vain? What was I doing?

But as my training progressed the mysteries and the purpose of dance began to unveil. We were trained with the basics of 12 formal styles of dance and martial arts. My guru once said, ‘you have conceived dance, it is still an embryo, you need to nurture it, protect it, think effectively of its growth, you should be aware of what is within you, until you deliver a full grown healthy baby-your choreography’ that becomes your own production a combination of your creative and intellectual power. This changed my life and yes I found an answer to the questions I had. Training under him for 6 years brought tremendous meaning in my life, as a dancer and above all as a human being!

Whatever you feel becomes an emotion which in turn could be directed to a movement, your body reacts to that movement, your eyes, your limbs, even your breath is controlled in respect to your emotion, so why not use these movements as a powerful medium of communication? Dance should not be limited to just movements, and showcasing mythological and historic events, it has divine power to evoke a thought, to translate a social message or sometimes to just reflect the expression of your soul.

When I look back at my journey, I realize all my prior training as a child has strengthened me to use abhinaya (expressions), mudras (hand gestures) and adavus to create newer movements and to use it effectively!!  When we create, every movement has an intellectual and creative flavor and thus enables us to produce a well crafted piece, and may be it could be your masterpiece.

I moved on then to create pieces I called, Women empowerment, Suicide, Abortion - Oh My Child!, Choice- A temptation? and many more. Some were huge successes while some a failure, but I am still learning and believe I will keep translating  my thoughts as long as The Lord enables me.

Today, when I train a bundle of kids, all I tell them is ‘Experience and feel every movement and it will transform your lives and thoughts. Nurture your body and mind and each of you have a great purpose as a dancer which they have to unveil themselves!!

And of course I strongly believe and know today ‘ Dance was my First Love’!!

Can you be squeezed?

Can you be squeezed, compromised and pushed aside? Then there is something you need to review and work to change. As the quote on this tee goes...

Book Review: Carte Blanche

For someone who grew up on volumes of Ian Flemming and someone who appreciated the slow seeping tension while Bond comes out with impossible situations and emerge a winner; For someone who watched Golden Eye, Tomorrow Never Dies and all the newer Bond movies several times and loved them; For someone who then watched Sean Connery and other battery of bonds relive the legend, I have a fairly good idea of how you would want a Bond should look like, act like, run like, think like and shoot like.

Carte Blanche sets the tone for a new Bond series to get a reboot; a veteran of the war in Afghanistan and former smoker. Everything you would expect in a Bond novel/movie is still here; the cars (a Bentley Continental GT and even a Subaru Impreza WRX) the girls (so many of them), the gadgets (including a custom iphone called a qiphone) and of course the over-the-top action.

Even some of the common friends of Bond make an appearance in this book, including; M, Moneypenny and Felix Leiter. The characters, while slightly updated for the contemporary setting, are almost Fleming'ish gave us, especially Bond himself and M (unfortunately back to the original male version and I am glad that the movie has Judi Dench). This does become something of a cliché though in the first half of the book, where I found myself wondering which classic character would show up next rather than focussing on the plot. I was super impressed by Deaver’s plot which stands realistic to the Bond theme and is not drawn and influenced by the new age publicity. Carte Blanche moves at the perfect pace to hook the reader while remaining true to the attention to detail of Fleming’s prose.

After a hair-raising opening sequence in Serbia featuring car chase, shoot-out and the near-derailment of a train carrying lethal chemicals, Bond's main mission is to prevent a massive terrorist atrocity. The only clue is an intercept promising thousands of deaths on the night of Friday 20th, with British interests adversely affected. Bond has only five days to determine the nature of the threat, identify its main players and stop them, while dodging unknown assailants who want him dead and the usual buffoonery of chinless incompetents within the British security services, sticklers for procedure who oblige him to interpret Carte Blanche in his own way.

Bond finds himself pitted against the murky Severan Hydt, magnate of a global empire of refuse collection and recycling – a nicely topical metaphor. Hydt is a particularly Deaveresque villain, a man whose macabre fascination with death and decay verges on pornographic. With the help of his old friends Felix Leiter and René Mathis, Bond follows Hydt's trail from the Balkans to Dubai to South Africa. How he closes the case and ends up with the women he loves is the plot.

The plot promises intensified fights, chasing sequences, fighting bad guys, having fun and chasing his own devils about his life. Deaver does a long dwindling chase with massive disturbances promising to eat up the land.

I loved the book and my rating might be colored by my love for Flemming's hero but I guess there can be an exception!

Rating: 4/5.

Book Review: Cut Like Wound

Isn't it textbook for a police officer to solve a case when he is suspended? Isn't it true that children end up doing what you tell them not to do? Isn't it funny that you have all the films of a police officer who is rogue, cares little about the rules, ignores his superiors and has a devoted family or has a problem at home? Isn't it text book to have a villain who is mysterious, powerful and cunning that you cannot find out who he is when he is standing right next to you? Well, take all these regular recipes and try to cook something new or you have an option to create a similar recipe but make it into a pleasing familiar dish that takes you to a nice place.

Anita Nair is a wonderful writer. In fact, hers would be one of my first choices for a weekend with a book, coffee and chips. I love the way she can bring out words and play with emotions easily out of the unknown. Her understanding of the human psyche, especially women psyche, is beautiful. Here in "Cut Like Wound" she comes out with a familiar story without delving in to what she can actually do. "Introducing Borei Gowda" comes as an early warning and sets out the course clear in this story. May be I should have known...

Anita Nair’s Inspector Borei Gowda, “soft in the middle, blurred at the edges” who knocks back shots of Old Monk, lovingly tends to his Bullet, and is blessed with superior deduction skills, that superpower of every hero detective from Poirot to Dalgliesh, is an anomaly in the Bengaluru police force and therefore a perfect protagonist.  Borei Gowda is a middle aged father, husband who fails on both parts, at least on what he feels she should be doing for them and is a old football-you-bought-and-used-for-a week in the police department. Known for his keen ability to excel and propel himself into the strongest and unclear situations and is ruthless Dabang attitude, Borei forms what you look for in a middle aged hero contemplating a divorce while wooing his high school sweetheart who is rich but conveniently divorced.

The plot is simple and tight. First a dead body appears of out no where. And sometime later another. Soon there are bodies every Friday night. All of them seem to be linked but there is no common link. Only Borei seems to have a link established between them and chases the ghosts of his own imagination while fighting with the system , authority, drug dealers, a powerful corporator, and himself. I like the way he personifies his bike and draws immense pleasure from simple situations that usually are the solace of a tired lonely soul. Nair's characterization runs with Borei and captures him in many angles and she has done a wonderful job of keeping the story simply attractive and with in a short span of 38 days. The rest of the story is about how Borei and his team finds out the mysterious murders and brings them to justice.

What Anita has managed to do in the book is to explain the realities of the shady areas in any town and how people are so madly driven by the experiences they have in their childhood and every day. "Cut Like Wound" also tries to look at the changing phenomena of the acceptance of transgenders and the reality. I am thrilled with the way she explains the streets of the city in Shivaji Nagar which can be in your city as well and places where you cannot go or are usually advised to keep out. Cut Like Wound takes you there and beyond while keeping the hair on your neck raised, every moment of the way. There is more to come in the next adventure of Borei...

I have an author-signed-copy thanks to flipkart :)

Book Review: The Shadow Throne

How would you feel if you suddenly got up and find out you are back in time? How would you feel all the movies you have in bollywood are time-themed? That's how I feel when I see the literature available today. How wonderful is tha to a history lover! Aroon Raman brings out a hot thriller that matches Ek Tha Tiger and probably Jab Thak Hai Jaan and a couple of other romantic crime thrillers. Ok minus the romance but then this is a men's movie with a woman cracking the case.

Chandra is a journo who is recovering from the death of his wife to cancer. He is entangled by Hassan, mostly willingly falls for a scoop of a story. He has to know more for himself than the the news article that would come from the plot. What starts with a murder of a flat-skulled giant thrown from the top of Qutub minar ends up in a chase from the caves of Afghanistan to the Pak- India border. What happens in between is like any other old thriller, only here we have a nuclear disaster to avert. But am surprised that I could finish a 300+ page book in two days flat.

Let's analyze the characters a bit without giving away the suspense of the book. Chandra is a unwilling crime seeker with a penchant for mysteries and a freelancer. His wife's friend Meenu plays an excellent teacher or professor who could come up with a choice solution to a riddle Tom Hanks could only dream of solving because she is a history professor! But I love the concept of RAW and ISI working together to solve the sovereignty of two states. Chandra exhibits a rare love for History and travel and is taken on a roller-coaster tide to unveil a nerve wringing thriller and as always he is cool as a cucumber because he is taking notes in his brain all the time.

Hassan, on the other hand, is a double agent trying to figure out what it right to do! Let us put it this way till you read the book. Hassan is trained and is mechanical when he is executing what his bosses want him to be doing and even otherwise. What we come to know is a multifaceted character with a single mean goal. Hassan also plays a good Salman Khan in the book and ends up mashed, tattered and tortured. What else can you get through when you have nothing to lose!

The other characters in the movie are the agents who play smart and cool. What I liked about them is that the book refers to them by names and designations that needn't be remembered as they have helped execute a plot so supreme that they are not significant in the story. What is measured as an outcome is a prophesy that makes the whole attention go on with a could of million lives at stake. Aroon takes it to his best of skills here when he brings the massive villain with a cult following and how he is remarkably versatile with the ways of the world and psychologically plays with everyone.

As I always believe, the greater the villain, the better the plot and the chance for the hero's redemption. I also love the fact that there are no artificial love scenes in the book and is very practically written. Aroon deserves a pat on his shoulder for what he has come up with but there are point which could improve the story. For example how can someone finish off so many things and slip out to Afghanistan so easily from India? A touch of Uncle Sam's troops and an agenda to include them would have helped. A slice of brotherhood in India and Tibet or China would have helped too.

What I would have done to end it in a perfect note would be to have an attempt on Hassan's life and a letter in Chandra's home stating that the Shadow throne still is on and you better watch out! I feel the book ended... how do I put it... too easily.

Appreciate

How can you change someone's day and make it better?

There is an important component that makes you live up to your potential and helps others live up theirs. The influence a commendation or an appreciation can bring to your work day is amazing. I found this in an auto and the guy didn't bargain too.

Who can you appreciate today?

Bengaluru belebath

Local is the new style. Bengaluru belebath's mobile outlets reach out to several people who cannot get up in the morning and prepare boxes for their lunch, or would like to taste something outside.

This seems to be an excellent idea especially because of the price tag @ 25 INR for lunch. Moreover the cuisine is something that would remind you of traditional tastes of Karnataka, something you had taste3d from your granny's kitchen.

The success or failure of this venture might depend on several factors like the quality, cost and the quantity of the offering and how it would like to reach out to its customers in the longer run but one thing is for sure. It has got the takers from the huge working class who wouldn't mind shelling out the cost for what they have.

Brands can tap in to your space with an excellent offering anytime, only once. But if the offering is good and improves everyday with something or the other and keeps you engaged and smiling then that would be the path to success. Unfortunately, you don't find many such brands around. Here is wishing luck to Bengaluru Belebath's team

Converting negative energy into positive

You’ve done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective, unstoppable determination.” – Ralph Marston

Here, I’m going to do a quick throwback to my high school physics to drive my point home a little bit deeper. The law of conservation of energy states that “the total amount of energy in a system remains constant over time”. In essence, energy can neither be created nor destroyed: it can only be transformed from one state to another. So you can transfer electrical energy to heat energy as in your cooker at home or chemical energy to electrical energy as in your batteries.
The point here is, you get a lot of different vibes from the world around you. Some negative, some positive. The truth is, you don’t need anything but positive energy in your life. If you think negative thoughts, you’ll yield negative results. Think positive thoughts and yield positive results. The only way to convert negative energy to positive is to be a positive thinker. When you get any words, reactions or attitude from anyone that brings you down or kills your morale, look for the positive side of it to encourage yourself and focus on that. No matter how minute or ridiculous the positive side seems, focus on it and don’t let yourself be bogged down by the negative.
Don’t get deceived by the school of thought that says focusing on the negative is being ‘realistic’. You can be realistic by thinking of how to remedy the situation and make it better or totally eliminate it. Doesn’t mean you’re not being realistic, you’re just working on a plan to convert that energy for your sanity. That in itself is a positive thing and should make it easier for you to focus on being happy.
Conclusively, negative energy CAN be converted. Actively train your mind to see the opportunities or positive side of every situation and you could significantly alter the course of your life.

Keep running!

Some things in life are tough till you try them out. God created everyone with the same potential and creativity. Some learn to harness it faster and some don't. Your potential is not determined by what you were till now. What you chose to do today, tomorrow and every day from now on, is what makes your future.

Dream on, move ahead and keep running!

The Taj Conspiracy: Book Review

Long. Really looooooong. That's how I felt when I saw this book and it came as a surprise package. I have to agree this is heady stuff. Coming from a background in history with special interests in architecture, especially Hindu and Mughal aerial topography, I have found this interesting. To put into perspective, this is a combination of history meets crime meets bollywood meets murder meets emotional atyachar meets chemistry meets carbon dating meets snake charmer meets communal riots meets reality of life in India meets unity meets sincerity! But for a change I kind of liked it!

Here is how the story goes. A dead body is discovered by Mehr, a Katrina Kaif styled history loving, Indian origin NRI who comes to India in search of her roots and finds herself entangled into the exploding story of communal riots and how some elements play the cards to fight it out for the Taj Mahal and the Shiva temple in the same structure.

In the process she meets, archaeologists, fanatics, survives several murder attempts, meets police officers, has close encounters with her own ghouls and goes through what we can call a bollywood style chasing sequence with mysteries all around. It is an exciting journey to follow Mehr and try to understand why we need to accept the reality of History and move on with a wider all accepting view. In between you find yourself transported on a lesson in linguistics and calligraphy, to a cave in Kashmir and enter in to the minds of criminal eradicating pest-control mode of policing by Pratap and SSP Raghav who are true in their spirit and passion but have different styles.

Sprinkle in some onion sautéing and old monk fueled revelry and a delirious liking for the dead bodies and how they are treated. You would need to find time and effort to follow the actual plot of declaring Taj as a Shiva temple and different pieces in the puzzle to make sense. How Mehr, aided by her two police friends solves the mystery and comes to a close shaving climax where she is rescued by the hero is very entertaining to read.

I liked the small chapter style and a matter of fact reporting with importance on food, moments that can get missed in a blink, action, in fact well packed action and the depth of knowledge in the author, especially when treating architecture and mystery. This is beautifully handled and woven into the story. Though it can be slightly cut short, may be by 50-60 pages, I think it is ok as long as the reader doesn’t get bored. The book made me go back to my college days where we used to spend hours discussing the differences in the temple architectures and the materials used and what was the reason.

To summarize, this is folklore + action + local detective + politics served with hot masala chai for you. What is missing is sugar, but isn’t that the way SSP Raghav likes it?

Rating: 3/5

How I braved Anu aunty and co-founded a million dollar company - book review

Koyal Chengappa made this happen! Sorry for the delay in posting this up Koyal.

When I first saw the book and its cover, I was expecting a fun ride with a lot of gyan on how to start a company and why you need to be different in doing things to succeed. But let me tell you that I was surprised the way it was written. How I braved Anu aunty and co-founded a million dollar company is a wonderful read with very less gyan and more practical look at how a brilliant idea can be translated into a reality.

Every corner in your life you encounter naysayers, people who belittle your ideas, beliefs and your passion and try to make you fall in line with others. Varun takes us on a journey on how you can still be successful when you follow your heart and have a good sound idea. The book traces few points that make it a master piece.

  1. Language: Written in a matter of fact style of reporting and being blunt and straight about what he feels about everything he has encountered in the process, Varun keeps the reality closer and cleaner. Here is a book for the new generation of readers and authors who matches their age group and hence the easy connect.
  2. Life: Taking life as it comes and living life on facebook is very realistically put and with snippets and with info related to actualities make it a worthy read. Being a Bangalorean has its own advantages and this book finds out how you don't need a classy MBA to figure out life's secrets and lessons.
  3. Friends & family: It is very important to have a good support system which primarily consists of your family and friends and the people you choose to surround yourself with. The decisions you take are mostly influenced by these people and they love you whatsoever. So build this network up before you look for something else.
  4. Networking: If there is one thing you can learn from facebook is that it is important to have a good network and keep at it all the time. It is your network that makes you stronger, the power of your ideas and decisions multiply themselves with the no. of people in your network. Every business needs one strong network and Varun tells us how he would go on to build a strong network with the technology and a little passion.
  5. Fun: Doing what you love is fun and this book tells you how to do it. Chase your dreams and do what you love. Simple solution to love.
Varun's book is a must read, especially if you are stuck doing what is not fun. It is more important if you are in the process of building your strengths to reality. Keep writing Varun. The journey has just begun and we really like to see how this goes forward.

Give value first

A while back I put a job out to bid to redesign a website. Many people placed bids, with the usual links to their portfolios and customer testimonials.

One web designer, however, went one better: She actually built an all-new site per the specs in my job posting, and sent me a link to it with a note saying that, if I chose her, she could have the site live on my server almost immediately after receiving payment.

She got the job!

In all of these examples, you’re seeing how people get ahead, and get sales, by giving value first before expecting to receive anything in return.

And that’s where most salespeople fail.

Chances are, you’re out selling, not because you are going out of your way to give value first, but because you need to make sales.

In other words, you’re trying to get something from the prospects you call on.

And they know it.

No one wants to buy from a salesperson who needs a sale. Or is out to get a sale. They want to buy from people who show value and give value first – because that means THEY are the ones who end up getting more value in the end!

Cold calling is the worst form of this. When you’re cold calling, what you’re actually doing is sub-communicating to prospects that you are out trying to get sales. It sends a message that you need a sale, and they can either give it to you, or say no.

What you really need to do is to have prospects wanting what you have – and leaving you in the powerful position to provide it, on your terms.

When you make a cold call, you make it completely impossible to employ this power dynamic. In a cold calling scenario, you have given the prospect complete power to say either “yes” or “no” and have left yourself with zero power to control the sales process going forward. The prospect is in charge now.
And most important of all, you’ve done nothing to give value first.

Cold calling takes away your power in a sales interaction, and it leaves prospects with the impression that you offer zero added value.

The very top salespeople, on the other hand, always go out of their way to show value first, and only try to make a sale after. And they avoid cold calling like the plague because they know that cold calling hands all of the power over to the prospect.

So if you want to become one of those top sales pros, then stop cold calling, start giving value first, and watch your sales numbers explode!

Blessed to be an Indian

A wonderful telugu song praising the simple things we cherish in our land.

This used to be a prayer song in schools across Andhra Pradesh for many years before the corporate education stepped in. Schools should be the point where seeds of education and national integrity are sown and parents should nurture them. I am proud and blessed to be an Indian.

Jai Hind!
