Managing Failure
Santosh sends in this... Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's answer to a question, "Could you give an example, from your own experience, of how leaders should manage failure" at Wharton.
Kalam: Let me tell you about my experience. In 1973 I became the project director of India's satellite launch vehicle program, commonly called the SLV-3. Our goal was to put India's "Rohini" satellite into orbit by 1980. I was given funds and human resources -- but was told clearly that by 1980 we had to launch the satellite into space. Thousands of people worked together in scientific and technical teams towards that goal.
By 1979 -- I think the month was August -- we thought we were ready. As the project director, I went to the control center for the launch. At four minutes before the satellite launch, the computer began to go through the checklist of items that needed to be checked. One minute later, the computer program put the launch on hold; the display showed that some control components were not in order. My experts -- I had four or five of them with me -- told me not to worry; they had done their calculations and there was enough reserve fuel. So I bypassed the computer, switched to manual mode, and launched the rocket. In the first stage, everything worked fine. In the second stage, a problem developed. Instead of the satellite going into orbit, the whole rocket system plunged into the Bay of Bengal. It was a big failure.
That day, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Prof. Satish Dhawan, had called a press conference. The launch was at 7:00 am, and the press conference -- where journalists from around the world were present -- was at 7:45 am at ISRO's satellite launch range in Sriharikota [in Andhra Pradesh in southern India]. Prof. Dhawan, the leader of the organization, conducted the press conference himself. He took responsibility for the failure -- he said that the team had worked very hard, but that it needed more technological support. He assured the media that in another year, the team would definitely succeed. Now, I was the project director, and it was my failure, but instead, he took responsibility for the failure as chairman of the organization.
The next year, in July 1980, we tried again to launch the satellite -- and this time we succeeded. The whole nation was jubilant. Again, there was a press conference. Prof. Dhawan called me aside and told me, "You conduct the press conference today."
I learned a very important lesson that day. When failure occurred, the leader of the organization owned that failure. When success came, he gave it to his team. The best management lesson I have learned did not come to me from reading a book; it came from that experience.

To stick or not to stick?
Sachin and Pepsi have separated. Period.
What does this tell you? Was Sachin pushed over other younger players by Pepsi? Does it mean his Brand image, value and sense are no longer appealing? I don't think so.
Sachin has been choosy about the brand he endorses and has a good team that decides. To think Sachin has no backup plan is silly. The question is what would happen is Sachin moved over to the other brand. I feel Sachin would be able to bring in more customers to the brand that when its without him. The reason is that the beverages as a product is a low involvement product and people don't ask for a brand and don't stop consuming other brand just because someone endorses it or has ceased to do so. But if I am selecting a 1.5 litre bottle I would love to have Sachin's pic on it. Let me be clear here I am no fanatic fan of Sachin.
I remember reading this is 'Cricket Talk'. Sachin was travelling on a jet back to India from South Africa tour. He was offered a soft drink in a glass by the air hostess. Before consuming Sachin asked if this was Pepsi to which the reply was Coke. Sachin put the glass back on the tray and asked for Pepsi and the reply was there was no Pepsi on board. Sachin smiled and asked for plain water. An elderly gentleman was sitting two rows behind him and having observed this went and asked him why he did this to which Sachin said, "I am the Brand Ambassador of Pepsi and so I shouldn't!" Sachin received a revised royalty option 2 days after he landed. Surprised Sachin's office called up Pepsi. The elderly gentleman on the flight was the Senior Vice President of Pepsi! That he does when he no one is observing him!
If this is the loyalty he shows I think he can sell any brand. One of the reasons sachin has been around for a long time is in his ability to push himself beyond what is his limit, in his ability to readjust, realign and refocus. It is something incredible, and hence I am just waiting to see someone capitalize on his brand.
Just imagine Sachin dressed in red on a Coke bottle, or in Orange for Tropicana, or even a new Sachin flavor!

The stock market is going to be healthy with the government staying stable as expected. Does this mean the testosterone levels in the body and the jubilation increase risk taking, may be yes. So you know when to buy and when to sell. As for today the stock is expected to reach 14800 and in the next two days could reach anywhere near 16000 .

The Power of Apology
Pope Benedict XVI has apologized. Does it undo what was done? Does it remove the pain and the scar? I don't think so. It sure removes the pain but the scar remains and reminds.
When you are sure that the customer is pained by what you/your product might have done the best thing is to apologize. Now some feel apology is not needed.
I think apology goes a building the brand value, its credibility and tenor. When you acknowledge that you have done something wrong and want to correct it people trust you more and would like to give you a chance. After all don't we all falter?
Now does it end with an apology? No apologize and repair!

High End Mobile set for 2000?
Mobile manufacturers through the Indian Cellular Association (ICA) estimate that 600,000 to 800,000 Chinese unbranded phones are making their way to India every month, accounting for 8 to 10 per cent of GSM-technology mobile phones sold in the country.
These are not entry-level phones but mid-level, feature-rich products at aggressive prices between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000. Most of these, branded mobile manufacturers said, would cost consumers at least three to five times more if they came from them.
According to research firm IDC, China shipped 85 million GSM handsets in the last fiscal. And it says China's percentage share is likely to go up since these phones offer swanky features ranging from 3 megapixel camera, terrestrial TV, music and MP3 players.
"This is an open and competitive industry and these products come through an open channel. The entry of Chinese products follows a fair amount of competition for all players," said Sunil Dutt, country head for Samsung's mobile business in India.

I also open hearts, take valves out, grind 'em, put in new parts, and when I finish this will work as a new one. So how come you get the big money, when you and me is doing basically the same work? "

Long Walk to Freedom
Journeys are often measured by distance travelled and time elapsed. But by which unit of measurement should one measure the journey of Nelson Mandela, from political prisoner to South Africa's first black President?As a young man, Mandela became disenchanted with non-violence as a form of political protest, and, in 1961, he co-founded the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation). The militant group coordinated a sabotage campaign against South African military and government targets, and even considered all-out guerrilla warfare should Apartheid not be lifted.
But, after being condemned to life imprisonment in 1964 and branded a terrorist, he saw the ultimate fruitlessness of using violent means to achieve peaceful ends. According to Mandela himself, Mahatma Gandhi became a major source of inspiration, and he soon inculcated the core tenets of satyagraha (the philosophy of non-violence).
Following his release from prison in 1990, this marked change in temperament allowed Mendela to pursue a policy of reconciliation and negotiation, rather than secession and violence. Ultimately, he became South Africa's first black President and helped the nation transition from a brutal, segregated sham-republic to a flourishing, multi-racial democracy. For his efforts, in 1993, Mandela would win what is arguably the world's most prestigious honour: the Nobel Peace Prize.
Today, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, we salute both the man and his Long Walk to Freedom.

Sarah tells me about the difference between Managing and Leading.
Some succeed in managing things and win for a situation but end up painting a Manager picture. A leader, on the other side, does not manage the situation but ends up setting an example. Though the situation is not as winsome as the first case it paints an excellent example.
What would be your style? Managing for short time result or Leading for a long time result?
I think it is better to Lead. Makeshift work is always shoddy!

We missed out on the stale air in the theatre, the air conditioning that is probably bad for your health, the heavily fattening, overpriced milk shakes, and the annoying titters and comments of people in the row behind who find the movie boring but have nothing better to do with their time, money or their lives.
The rising cost of leisure activities will affect the upper middle class soon as the consequences of global recession hit them in the next fifteen minutes.

What if we all spend less, even if we do have spare money? .... Think of all the no-expense leisure activities and you will be amazed at how creative you can get. Fly a kite with your kids or play a board game at home. You can make the kite and the board game yourself or with the whole family. Think Differently
Maini's tryst with automobiles began when, at the age of 13, he took to go-karts and started fiddling around with them. He moved on to doing mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan, where he also finally decided to specialise in solar-electric vehicles.
Today, he can't really recall why he made that choice but says his father probably had a role to play. "He always used to tell me that if one thinks differently, there would be opportunities."

What to Project?

My kid has more Chromosomes than your kid!
Raphaela my eldest daughter has Down Syndrome, she turns 4 in just under two weeks. Since she was a tiny baby we have called her a Diva, she's blessed us with endless joy and endless attitude! She required open heart surgery when 
she was just 5 weeks old, but she bounced back beautifully from that (Big thanks to Dr Pohlner & Staff at Brisbane's Prince Charles Hospital) & hasn't looked back. Now at nearly four she does everything and more that any "un-enhanced" child would do.

Less and less children with Down Syndrome are being born into our society, due higher rates of prenatal detection and ignorance about what its really like to live with this Syndrome.
We are losing a whole generation of Raphaela's peers because of fear and misinformation. The world is not a better place with this practice of modern "eugenics".

Sometimes you need to look beyond the rules and try to help the customer. You cannot stick to your rulebook and expect the customer to be happy. If what the customer is asking for is logical, possible and is allowed by your organization's rules, DO IT. Why do people hate government offices? Sticking by the rulebook just because you can makes people hate you.
People go to places, shops, outlets, fuel pumps, doctors only when they love the service not because they get the things they are looking for. So kick the rulebook if you can.

Thought
I am sure you must have seen this. Drunkards sleeping no where! All the hard earned money going down the drain sipping cheap liquor. What needs to be done. Telling these guys its not right does not work. You need to make them straight. Educate their children and wives. Show them vidoes what happens with too much drinking. Do something that scares these guys and makes them responsible. Something that helps them release the tension and pressure and divert the energy elsewhere, constructively.
What makes normal people behave odd and erratic. Why is everyone getting angry, rude and irresponsible? May be the pressure in your organization is too much. Is you are a manager you need to ensure your team stays healthy and happy. If you are a team member you need to ensure your colleagues and manager feel belonged and happy to come to the workplace. If you are a HR you should know what to do. Happy people produce quality work.. Anger multiplies the errors and frustration leads to sickness.
The Samsung Experience
At Samsung we went to buy a TV. Look at the following observations.+ve:
- Huge choice
- Spacious showroom
- Very helpful, knowledgable salesmen (about 4 ppl around us when we were choosing)
- Good price
- Nice ambience

- Lot of delay in making the bill
- Credit card machince not working
- Five forms to fill! (It took a good thirty minutes)
- No option to deliver the TV home
- No salesmen interested in us after the sale
Having a good showroon and stock does not invite the customers retracing their steps. The small things you do to ensure the customer is happy when leaving.
Always Close Strong. It is as important as Opening Strong.

Only the Times of India gave even a hint that it smelt something fishy, but ran a story all the same.

Recent media reports said that Citi would slash 10 per cent of its 65,000-strong investment banking workforce globally. Currently, bonuses at Citi are largely dependent on the results of a manager's division and individual performance.
"People familiar with the matter said the ultimate goal was to link bonuses of senior managers and junior employees to Citis over all performance. However, they added that the first stage was likely to involve skewing bonuses to take into account how much shared business each manager generated," the Financial Times said in an article published in its online edition on Sunday.

Be Sure or Sore
In a highly secret operation, German intelligence teamed up with Indian intelligence to arrest 88-year-old Johaan Bach from the jungles of Khanapur on the Karnataka-Goa border. A man supposedly wanted for his role in the Holocaust and who's name surprisingly bore resemblance to the 18th century composer and even had an 18th century piano for sale.
The news was delivered to the inboxes of media houses on Friday by a group called Perus Narkp and soon went into print. Some even quoted an intelligence official in Karnataka, who insisted Bach had not just been arrested but even moved to Germany. Others had a map of how Bach had evaded arrest elsewhere and landed in Goa.You would think a press release from an unknown group about a war criminal sharing a name with a famous composer being caught in the jungles of Goa trying to sell a stolen 18th-century piano would be worth double-checking. Well apparently not.

The news was delivered to the inboxes of media houses on Friday by a group called Perus Narkp and soon went into print. Some even quoted an intelligence official in Karnataka, who insisted Bach had not just been arrested but even moved to Germany. Others had a map of how Bach had evaded arrest elsewhere and landed in Goa.You would think a press release from an unknown group about a war criminal sharing a name with a famous composer being caught in the jungles of Goa trying to sell a stolen 18th-century piano would be worth double-checking. Well apparently not.

When you are using some data you need to be doubly sure about the content and the source or else you are courting trouble. Too bad many well known media houses fell for this.
