Monday Blues: Lust for success

Lust is a typically sad word and is used in negative connotation but I guess it is justified when I use it to show how desperate and passionate you should be for success.

Lusting for success doesn't mean that you have to turn evil and do bad things to achieve success but it means be as stringent and strict to win and keep at it till you win. May God be with you in your endeavors :)

Take care of your problems, worries and issues. You don't need to just put bitterness off for a while and let it come back. You need to take care of it.

And be thankful

Gratitude is a positive emotion. Well, you knew that part already. For years psychologists have tried to read what goes in your mind when you are thankful or givig thanks. Some interesting results have come up and it is in tune with what you think - giving thanks can change your mood and stop the emotional train from going in the wrong direction. Not just that being thankful can even reset the life button and change yoru attitude to being positive. Even when you think things aren't going your way. Especially when things are bad.

Being thankful works wonders in taking your brain from the junk place to a happy place. Away from the chaos that is gaining on you and your emotions. Stopping and giving thanks can help you stop the vicious cycle and help you come up with a potent positive emotion that will stimulate victorious and incredible joyous feeling. Your thinking gets clearer and better.

Heartfelt thanksgiving would not just reduce whinig but cut down on your complaint-flags your brain would raise and help you look at the warm light beam in the clouded valley of sorrow.

Robert Emmons, a psychology professor at the University of California and feels that it is more important to focus on people you are grateful for like parents, spouses, siblings or even your dog!

This will not just help you feel more alive, alert and interested but also help you be more enthusiastic. Gratitude is often called the most-neglected emotion and there is a huge impact of gratitude in your social, personal and developmental behaviour.

It's important to remind ourselves that the world doesn't always suck. Also remember the people who make you feel precious, happy, confortable and cared for as those are the people who actually love you and help you perform better in whatever you are doing.

If being grateful actually helps you to be a better performer, a better leader, a better sudent and a better person, then why not be grateful?

As St. Paul writes in Colossians 3:15: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

Secret to success

Found the original quote in Latin for my previous post and here it is...

Pedes in Terra ad Sidera Visus
(Feet on the ground and sight to the universe)

How good is your Support Team?

Any event to be successful needs many inputs from many people. Those on the stage and those off it. The ones on the stage are alwyas recognized but the latter are ignored. Most of the times they make it to a line in the 'vote of thanks' speech. But the contribution is much more than that.

I was at Manipal Institute of Management, Manipal to participate in the International Conference on "Harnessing Entrepreneurial Potential of Women for Economic Growth" organized by Manipal Institute of Management, Manipal held during January 22-24, 2009. I presented a paper co-authored with my Prof. Chowdari Prasad, Professor of Finance & Registrar, Alliance Business School, Bangalore on 'Women Entrepreneurs and Networking'.

There were 30 student volunteers from BBM and MBA batches of MIM and the way they conducted the event was amazing. All of them were very eager to help, always smiling and proactive. The work day was almost 16 hours, included running up and down 3 floors around 3 rooms, handling around 250 people from different locations, faculty, press, judges and guests. It was an event of perfection, thanks to them and wouldn't have been a success if they had not put in the extra effort and passion into what they were doing. This impressed me.

In a world full of escapists, it's rare to find such commitment and passion. If you have the support staff of this character, DON'T lose them. If you don't, you know what to do. A good support staff/team is the backbone to the success of any venture.

The SPECIAL lunch

Today's lunch at the Canteen was superb. The people who served had a wide smile on their face. Most of the people expressed their satisfaction. You might have faced such situation too. Once in a while the food at the place you eat is extremely good. It is not because it turned out to be good but because the cook and the management wanted it to be. Now this means that they took extra care and ensured all the ingredients were correct, used to measure and cooked with the intention to be better. And when such a thing happens the management is behind you to get the feedback that the food is good. This is called 'special' lunch.

This can be generalized across all the services: Hospitals, artists, musicians, teachers, traffic cops, drivers, customer service agents, companies, salesmen, tele-callers, government, watchmen, and what not. Any service if it is good is because it was meant to be so. Some one took extra care to ensure that the experience was a pleasant one, exceeding or at least meeting your expectations.  In such a case they deserve the credit for the extra degree, extra effort. But my question here is why can't it be special every day? Why can't the call centre executive put in extra effort to make my experience special? Why can't the faculty prepare extra to make my learning more wholesome? Why can't the students prepare for the class in advance and push the instructor to the limits? Why can't traffic cops be more pleasant? Why doesn't the government be more responsible? The list goes on and on.

On the other hand why can't you hire people who are passionate about making some one's life special? Engineers who want to create products which exceed customer's expectations? Why don't you make this your strategy?

It is YOUR CHOICE to make someone feel special. If only you can put in some extra effort. Loyalty is not built in a day, or is it?

I Dream, I Will

I have a dream, a song to sing
To help me cope with anything
If you see the wonder of a fairy tale
You can take the future even if you fail
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I’ll cross the stream - I have a dream

I have a dream, a fantasy
To help me through reality
And my destination makes it worth the while
Pushing through the darkness still another mile
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I’ll cross the stream - I have a dream
I’ll cross the stream - I have a dream

I have a dream, a song to sing
To help me cope with anything
If you see the wonder of a fairy tale
You can take the future even if you fail
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I’ll cross the stream - I have a dream
I’ll cross the stream - I have a dream

We win, always

Nariman point, one of the three points of hostage situation has been regained. Commandos cheer up and come out after 44 hours of fighting, victorious. They are exhausted, tired, tested, strained both physically and mentally but there is nothing like victory. God bless India.

Agreed that we were able to win back all that was seized from us but why let the dogs come in in the first place? Why not create a system that keeps stray dogs away.

How r u sleeping?

Sleep less. This is one of the best investments you can make to make your life more productive and rewarding. Most people do not need more than 6 hours to maintain an excellent state of health. Try getting up one hour earlier for 21 days and it will develop into a powerful habit. Remember, it is the quality not the quantity of sleep that is important. And just imagine having an extra 30 hours a month to spend on the things that are important to you.

Taste of victory

The taste of vitory cannot be comphrended. But it is definitely good. The passion, toil and sacrifice shown to achieve it makes it even better. So dont be disheartened or feel bad about the effort you are putting in as you will reap the benefits for sure.
