Five things you didn't know about Jallianwalah Bagh

You read it in your text books and are overwhelmed about what happened but to visit this holy place is nothing less than a pilgrimage for me.

Here are five things interesting about Jallianwalah Bagh in Amritsar.

  1. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre was a tragic event that occurred on April 13, 1919, in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, during the British Raj. It was a turning point in India's struggle for independence from British rule.

  2. The Jallianwala Bagh was a public garden in the heart of Amritsar that was enclosed by high walls on all sides. The garden was the site of a peaceful protest against the British government's repressive Rowlatt Act, which allowed the authorities to detain suspects without trial.

  3. On that fateful day, British troops under the command of General Reginald Dyer opened fire on a crowd of unarmed and peaceful protestors who had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh. The shooting continued for 10-15 minutes, leaving hundreds dead and wounded.

  4. The Jallianwala Bagh is now a national monument, and a memorial has been erected to commemorate the lives lost in the massacre. The Martyrs' Memorial is a flame-shaped structure that is surrounded by a garden and a museum that displays the historical events of the tragedy.

  5. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre had a profound impact on India's freedom struggle, and it galvanized the Indian people to rise up against British rule. It was a turning point in India's quest for independence, and it played a significant role in shaping the future of the country.
